 Taylor Knox - 2

The image above was taken at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach during the round of 64. There were approximately 50,000 spectators on the beach and I had a great position.  However, once the finals started, at least 25,000 beach goers headed into the shore break making it impossible to shoot any longer.  I remember one photographer had his own ladder from which he proceeded to continue shooting.

I prefer to shoot from a low angle to accentuate the size of the surf because Huntington Beach is not known for its large surf in the middle of the summer. Next year, though, I'll remember to bring a ladder for the finals.

The image above was captured on a D2H with 300-800 zoom mounted on a gimbal head and aluminum tripod.  I generally shoot from a little 3 leg seat since I may be in spot for over 8 hours.
